Ven Pongal

An Authentic Ven Pongal Recipe

Ven Pongal is considered one of the ritual breakfast down south. It is made of reice and dal which surely make it healthy. Pongal is related to festival "Pongal" in Tamilnadu. It is cooked in many differnet ways salty or sweet. But thisversion of ven pongal with loads of ghee is definitely one of my favorites and easy to cook too.

Note Down The Ingredients

  • Raw Rice 1 cup
  • Split Green Gram 1/4 cup
  • Ghee 3 tbsp
  • Cumin Seeds 1 tsp
  • Pepper Corns 10
  • Ginger 1 inch piece Chopped in to very small pieces
  • Green Chili 1 or 2
  • Curry leaves 1 strand
  • Salt as required
  • Cashew Nuts 10
  • Water 4 cups

Method To Prepare

  1. Wash rice and dal together
  2. In a pan add ghee, cumin, Ginger, Pepper Corns, Green Chili, Curry leaves, Cashew and fry for 30 sec.
  3. Add 4 cups of water,bring to boil. Add the washed rice,dal,salt and pressure cook for 4 whistles in medium flame.Wait until pressure gets released by itself,open and mash it.
  4. To season it First add ghee, when hot add pepper and let it start splutter and then switch off the flame.
  5. Add cashews and fry till it starts golden and then lastly add jeera. Add curry leaves and asafoetida lastly.
  6. Mix it well and then add it to pongal and mix well.

    Tips

  • If it is too dry/thick then add some milk to bring it to desired consistency
  • If it is too watery put it on flame until water evaporates
  • The more the ghee is added more the tasty the pongal would be.
  • You can add turmerc for a yellow looking pongal.
  • Serve it super hot with coconut chutney or sambar as an accompaniment :)
